Procalcitonin is the propeptide of calcitonin, a glycoprotein with no hormonal activity. Since the first report of Assicot that PCT can be used as a marker for early bacterial infection, it has been defined as a new indicator of inflammation. PCT has been widely used in diagnosis of infectious diseases and was recognized by the International Conference of Sepsis as a diagnostic indicator in 2001. In recent years, PCT is regarded as a warning indicator of systemic inflammatory response syndrome, sepsis, and acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Concentration of PCT is very low in health people (Adults: 10~50 pg/mL), yet increases rapidly for people have present systemic bacterial infections that could be detected in two hours after infection. PCT is stable in vivo with a half-life of 25~30 hours. PCT is an ideal marker for bacterial infections. It does not only work as a reference of early diagnosis, but also monitors disease process and guides the medication.

Dynamiker Human Procalcitonin Assay is based on the Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). It is used for the quantitative detection of Human Procalcitonin in serum and plasma, offering a diagnostic reference for infection. The kit is intended for professional use.
